Give Inmates Psychiatric Drugs–That’ll Fix Them Good

Do not think about, write about or deal with  human behavior without determining the effects of incentives.

The hard working and productive of the world produce the economic resources which are taxed away and given to the shiftless and non-productive or given to academics who in turn endlessly criticize the hardworking and productive. It’s a system that can only be supported by those with no sense of irony or Kafka.

The following quote is appropriate to today’s topic. These women, many of them with drug problems, are given drugs based on the knowledge that this is a good thing. When I was in corrections, I questioned the use of psychiatric drugs for people with drug problems. I was archly informed by a psychiatrist that what the women were getting was “medicine” not “drugs”, a distinction I find elusive. All the damage done by psychiatric drugs is ignored as well as their ineffectiveness. This is replaced; however, by the illusion of knowledge.

The main obstacle to progress is not ignorance, but the illusion of  knowledge." — Daniel Boorstin

More Than 60% of Female Inmates in Canadian Prisons are Prescribed Psychiatric Medication

The average rate of female prisoners in Canada’s prison system who receive psychiatric medication has jumped from 42% in 2001 to over 60% today, with some regions prescribing psych meds at a rate of up to 75%, according to a joint investigation by the Canadian Press and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.  Former prisoners and their advocates have been complaining for years about the overmedication of inmates, with Seroquel –  a powerful antipsychotic — routinely being prescribed to female prisoners as a sleeping aid.

An antipsychotic drug given as a sleeping aid. Abilify is a drug also with multiple effectiveness. If fixes psychosis, bipolar disorder and depression—the Swiss Army Knife of “medications.”
