Why Politicians Should Never Run Anything–Part 2234

Do not think about, write about or deal with  human behavior without determining the effects of incentives.

Ontario, my jurisdiction, has some of the highest electricity rates in North America. The rates are rising into the foreseeable future with no end in sight. There are several reasons for this: Political mismanagement including “green energy”, political corruption and this one, high wages and benefits.

This is a case study. It’s important to know that this was 20 years ago. The person in question obtained some kind of certification as an electrician. He joined the public utility, which pretends not to be one, at $35 per hour handing out tools. In one of the periodic acts of political theater called “cutting costs to the bone”, he was “fired” with a redundancy package of $50,000. A few months later he was rehired at $45 per hour and will soon be drawing a huge pension. And that’s government for you.
